Sunflowers on the Bridge

Description

The third, final and my favourite of the kimonos on the bridge silk paintings. It was the most fun to paint this one because it was like the result of my "practise" on the other two. Plus it has a nicer design in general.

Media: Gutta (bleurgh!) and silk paint on stretched silk.

I love your painting. The kimono is beautiful and the clasped hands amazing. What is the outlines of the flower petals done in?

My daughter and I have just started doing silk paintings using gutta and dyes. A local artist gave my daughter a three hour lesson on silk paintings when I bought one of his paintings. That led to my getting hooked on silk painting (using dyes) and deviant art. I have only done one painting so far and it's not good enough to post, but I look at it as my practice piece. However for my first time doing art in MANY years, it really was quite good.

I have to agree on your comments about gutta. It was smelly and the hardest part of the entire painting portion of the artwork.

I also experimented a little with using no flow instead of gutta in a few places and will definitely experiment with it some more. I found that if you paint the no-flow on and then dye the silk near it, the no flow acts like a resist. If you paint over the no flow it will either resist the dye or grab a ton.

What techniques have you tried and are you using paints or dyes?
